Long before fitness influencers made it trendy, walking was a popular sport and a public spectacle. In 19th century America and Europe, the professional sport of “pedestrianism” drew large crowds eager to watch athletes put one foot in front of another. As one of the world’s first spectator sports, walking became at once a form of exercise and a competitive event — even drawing women determined to prove that pedestrianism wasn’t just for men.

Fast forward to modern times, and walking is again in the spotlight — this time thanks to social media, walking apps, and wearable tech that nudge us to hit our daily step goals. What’s changed is that we now have the science to back up what our ancestors perhaps intuitively knew: Regular walking may increase healthspan and lifespan while boosting overall well-being.

The perennial question remains, however: How many steps per day for longevity benefits? While 10,000 steps has become a societal standard, research shows the benefits start with even fewer steps — especially when combined with a longevity diet and supplements like NOVOS Core.

Ready to walk your way to a longer life? This article explores the science of step counts and how many steps per day you may need to live longer.

The Origin of the 10,000 Steps Theory

The 10,000-steps recommendation actually began as part of a Japanese marketing campaign in the 1960s, when a pedometer called the “manpo-kei” (translating to “10,000 steps meter”) hit the market. The device makers promoted the idea that 10,000 steps a day was the secret to staying healthy.

While catchy and memorable, the number wasn’t rooted in medical research. Yet over time, it became a benchmark reinforced by fitness apps, wearables, fitness professionals, and influencers like. But is 10,000 the magic number to shoot for? Let’s look at the science.

What Science Says About Steps and Longevity

Modern research suggests you don’t need to walk exactly 10,000 steps daily to boost longevity. The benefits begin well below that threshold and increase steadily with more daily steps.

One study appearing in JAMA Network Open showed that middle-aged adults who took at least 7,000 steps per day had a 50% to 70% lower mortality risk than those taking fewer than 7,000 daily steps.

More recently, a 2024 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine analyzed more than 72,000 participants over nearly seven years. Researchers found that even modest increases above 2,200 steps per day correlated with a lower risk of early death and cardiovascular disease, regardless of sedentary time. Longevity benefits increased with as few as 4,000 to 5,000 steps per day, with all-cause mortality risk dropping the most for those taking between 9,000 and 10,500 daily steps.

A separate 2023 large-scale meta-analysis confirmed these patterns across 15 international studies. Researchers found an incremental reduction in mortality risk with each higher quartile of daily steps. For adults over 60, benefits leveled off around 6,000 to 8,000 steps per day, while younger adults saw the curve flatten at roughly 8,000 to 10,000 steps. The analysis also found that walking pace didn’t impact longevity as much as total steps, suggesting that how far you walk matters more than how fast.

How Many Daily Steps To Live Longer?

So, what’s the ideal step count for health and longevity? Research points to a range for optimal benefits:

  • Adults over 60: Aim for 6,000 to 8,000 steps per day
  • Adults under 60: Aim for 8,000 to 10,000 steps per day

Any increase in daily movement helps, especially if you’re starting from a low baseline. Reaching just 4,000 steps per day can enhance cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of premature death, even for those with high sedentary time.

Ultimately, consistency is more important than perfection. Adding short, manageable bursts of walking throughout the day supports your brain, heart, metabolism, and overall health. How Long Does It Take To Walk 10,000 Steps?

Most healthy adults walk at a pace of about 3 miles per hour and 100 steps per minute. In other words, it will take you about one hour and 40 minutes to walk 10,000 steps.

If carving out the time for 10,000 steps sounds daunting, the good news is that you need not get your steps all at once. In fact, short, frequent walks that break up time spent sitting may improve circulation and reduce inflammation — two important longevity factors.

You can easily rack up your steps without drastically changing your routine:

  • Take a brisk 15-minute walk in the morning, after lunch, and in the evening.
  • Park farther from entrances.
  • Take the stairs whenever possible.
  • Pace during phone calls. Better yet, try a “walking meeting.”
  • Walk with a friend or a dog to make it social and enjoyable.
  • Take a walk in nature for additional benefits, from boosting mood to improving brain function.

Movement + Cellular Health = A Powerful Longevity Combo

Walking is an excellent low-impact physical activity. It’s also a great way to signal to your body that you’re investing in your future health. Daily movement offers numerous benefits:

  • Improves cardiovascular function and lowers blood pressure
  • Enhances metabolic flexibility and blood sugar regulation
  • Reduces systemic inflammation
  • Supports cognitive function and mental health

To optimize longevity, pair movement with smart supplementation. NOVOS Core targets the root causes of aging at the cellular level, including cellular senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Its science-backed ingredients — like glycine, alpha-ketoglutarate, and magnesium malate — work synergistically with daily movement to:

  • Support mitochondrial energy production
  • Reduce the buildup of aging “zombie” cells
  • Enhance resilience against stress and inflammation
  • Promote healthy DNA and collagen production

While walking supports your physical body, NOVOS Core strengthens your cellular foundation. Together, they help you live healthier for longer and find joy in daily movement.
