In this long-term study, aged rats were supplemented daily with Acticoaย  powder, a high-quality cocoa extract, at a dose of 24 mg/kg/day starting at 15 months of age. After 12 months of continuous intake, the cocoa group showed significant improvements in memory, urinary dopamine levels, and, most strikingly, an 11% increase in lifespan compared to controls [R].

As shown in the figure below, survival curves clearly separated between groups, with cocoa-fed animals living longer and maintaining function later in life. This study provides experimental evidence that whole cocoa, not just isolated flavanols, can positively affect biological aging and longevity.
