What Is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin and Lifespan Extension

A 2024 study published in Geroscience assessed the impact of astaxanthin on lifespan in UM-HET3 mice, a genetically heterogeneous and highly rigorous model used in aging research. Astaxanthin was administered orally to both male and female mice, and survival was tracked across three independent test sites.

Lifespan extension was observed specifically in male mice, where the pooled data demonstrated a consistent rightward shift in the survival curve, indicating delayed mortality and increased median lifespan compared to controls. No statistically significant effects were observed in female mice, a result that is not uncommon in aging research using this model. Importantly, among all compounds tested in the same study, astaxanthin was one of the few to produce any survival benefit, highlighting its translational potential.

Figure 1 shows the pooled survival data from all sites for male mice only, comparing groups treated with astaxanthin (green) versus untreated controls (red). The difference in survival is sustained across the full lifespan range [R].
